Broker vs. Carrier: What's the Difference?
When you ship a vehicle, two different roles are usually involved: the carrier and the broker. Knowing the difference helps you understand who has your car and who to call.
What a carrier does
A motor carrier owns the truck and physically transports your vehicle. They employ the driver, hold the operating authority (USDOT/MC), and carry the cargo insurance that covers your car in transit. When your vehicle is on a trailer heading down the highway, it’s on a carrier’s equipment.
What a broker does
A broker arranges transportation. They don’t own the truck — they match your shipment to a carrier, negotiate the rate, handle the booking and paperwork, and coordinate pickup and delivery. Good brokers vet the carriers they assign, confirm insurance, and stay in the loop through delivery.
Most companies you find online are brokers. That’s not a bad thing — a broker with a strong carrier network can often find you a better price and faster pickup than you’d get calling carriers one by one.
Why the distinction matters to you
- Insurance rides with the carrier’s policy. Ask who the assigned carrier is and confirm coverage.
- Who to call during transit depends on the model. A broker coordinates; the carrier drives.
- Accountability. You want to know who physically possesses your vehicle.
